Threatening Your Life Scam.
- by Scams.net On May 27, 2008 - 1:49 PM
This story was published in the Racine Journal Times - Racine, Wisconsin. and is worthy of posting here at Scams.net:

RACINE - Police were called to the home of a Racine man who received a threatening e-mail.

According to reports, the e-mail was sent to the man on Friday at 5:13 a.m. with the subject: MR. SOMEONE YOU CALL YOUR FRIEND WANTS YOU DEAD.

Police said the sender said he had been given 10 days to kill the Racine man. The e-mail said the sender had been paid, but would instead send the man a tape of the person who wants him killed in exchange for $8,000. The message also warned the Racine man not to contact police.

Reports said the message was traced through the man’s Internet provider to an island in the Indian Ocean.

Tax Season: Beware of Scammers!
- by Scams.net On Apr 07, 2008 - 11:11 AM
No, no, no, we are not referring to the IRS! Well, we might be, but that's not what we mean in this case.

Under no uncertain terms should you respond to any email whereby the sender is claiming to be or represent the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The simple fact is; the IRS does not send emails to taxpayers.

Internet Fraudsters use "phishing" methods to try and get personal information from you. By using well prepared, official looking emails, they are attempting to lure you into sending information which will compromise your personal security. Don't be fooled! The IRS will never send you an email requesting information.

Note from Justin Berger: Son of Hank Berger.
- by Scams.net On Nov 20, 2007 - 1:31 PM
Justin Berger, son of the late Hank Berger has opted to contact me regarding our stance on the activities/position of his father in this case. Here is the email sent by Justin with my comments offered afterwards:

I have removed Justin's email per his request. No sense in rekindling bad thoughts. Justin expressed to me his displeasure about how I was speaking about his dad. As a son and father myself I understand his position regardless of whether or not we will ever come to agree about this story on the whole.

I clearly state I do not like to see bad things happen to people, to include your father. However, I am a strong believer in Karma.

Some points for clarification:

1) Scams.net currently gets a little over 100 unique visitors a day.

2) My father did not raise me, my mother did. They divorced when I was four and he wasn't around. I wrote the story because when I was alerted to your fathers claims of being the buyer I knew it was false.

Also, I would be more than happy to add your point of view to the story, Justin. You may send me another email detailing your position or send a phone number and we can talk about it, in a civil manner.

Common Scams Defined.
- by Scams.net On Sep 22, 2007 - 10:07 PM
Home-based or "work at home" scams:
Fraudulent schemes often use the Internet to advertise purported business opportunities that will allow individuals to earn thousands of dollars a month in "work-at-home" ventures. These schemes typically require the individuals to pay anywhere from $35 to several hundred dollars or more, but fail to deliver the materials or information that would be needed to make the work-at-home opportunity a potentially viable business.

Often, after paying a registration fee, the applicant will be sent advice on how to place ads similar to the one that recruited him in order to recruit others, which is effectively a pyramid scheme. |A Wikipedia article|

Employment Scams:
Employment scams, also know as job scams, are a form of advance fee fraud scamming where certain unscrupulous persons posing as recruiters and/or employers offer attractive employment opportunities which require the job seeker to pay them money in advance, usually under the guise of work visas, travel expenses, and out-of-pocket expenses.

The scams typically involve lucrative offers of employment in Europe, the Middle East, West Africa, or South Africa with money demanded to be paid to an agency or travel agent for visas or travel costs. These companies often present themselves with official looking websites and... [Read More]
